...And You Will Know Us
By the Trail Of Dead have confirmed for Coachella as well as Atmosphere. This is gearing up to be absolutely insane. Tickets go onsale Feburary 14th and I imagine that they are going to be a hot commodity. The last time I saw the Trail of Dead I ended up onstage at First Ave. after Jason Reece invited about 20 of us up there to thrash about for the last song. We ended up smashing into his drum kit (at his behest) and having a great time all around.

Again, Thank You
The NY Times Mr. Krugman intimates what I was trying to get at yesterday much more eloquently and with more informed examples of the egregrious mistakes of our current Administration. Please register and read his column here.

I Got Drunk and I Fell Down
Not really, but I did get drunk off scotch and play records with some Livingstons tonight. On the playlist: Bright Eyes, Husker Du, Elliott Smith, Kraftwerk, Jonathan Richman, Low, and some crazy two some from the seventies that David found at the house where he is housesitting. Tonight sure beat watching late night TV by a long shot. Looking over my previous post, I don't know what compelled me to go off, but I think that I should do it more regularly in a bit more coherent fashion. Maybe cutting my morning intake of coffee from three cups to two or (the horror!!) even one might help matters. Whatever though, I'm wasted.

WMD
The whole imbroglio surrounding Iraqi weapons of mass destruction is becoming extremely tedious and frustrating. The CIA peddled faulty intelligence to the NSA, Vice-President Cheney(who visited the CIA in the spring of 2002 to assess the validity of its claims), and eventually President Bush who used that intelligence as a justification for the invasion of Iraq. I cannot believe that a majority of Americans are not more up in arms about the fact (or so it seems due to Mr. Kay's comments to Congress) that either our intelligence community screwed up big time, or the Bush Administration manipulated the means (CIA intelligence) to justify an acceptable end(the invasion of Iraq).
Kay claims that there was no political pressure to manufacture evidence of WMD, but that hardly leaves the Bush Administration at no fault. The Administration was clearly gunning to take down Iraq and while, theoretically, if the CIA is telling you something it's a good bet that it's right on, it is hard for me to believe that there was no one from the other side saying, "Hold on, let's not move so fast here. Why don't we check out the other side of this thing?" Where are the voices of dissent within the Administration? Are they audible or, more importantly, do they even exist?
In reality, it seems this Administration silences the voices of dissent before they have a chance to raise any objections to whatever the Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld triumvirate has decided is the proper line of policy to pursue. It makes no sense to me how the people in our highest levels of government could be so misled into thinking that Iraq is an imminent threat that they decide to start a preemptive war. The bottom line is that this Administration was gung-ho to slap around Iraq from the start. They knew that they were weak from a decade of economic isolation, posed a very small threat to our military, and would serve as an example of American might to other would be despots in the Middle East. The CIA intelligence, shoddy and poorly researched as it seems that it was, provided a perfect excuse to feed to Congress and the American people that this war was necessary.
Why isn't there more outrage on the part of the American people? It seems that a majority of people think that the ousting of Saddam Hussein is justification enough for the war and, unfortunately, it is hard to disagree. The man was a brutal dictator who gassed and strarved millions of his own people. I'm thankful that he is behind bars, but at what cost should this line of action be pursued in the future? Surely there are regimes that pose a more imminent threat to American security than Hussein posed and often with dictators just as brutal and oppressive. Are they next? Where will this end and at what cost? And really, are we any safer now that someone like Saddam is behind bars?
Personally, (and I am sure that the people of Iraq would disagree with me) I don't feel any safer. I never believed the hype that Iraq was an imminent threat to American national security in the first place. What would really make me feel much safer is the knowledge that there are people leading our country who are being fed reliable data as to the realistic threats that certain organizations pose to us. That and an Administration leading our country that is able to analyze a particular situation and make an informed decision as to the proper course of action without having to rely on "moral clarity" as a crutch.

I Need Another Job
It turns out that until I get another job to supplement the paltry income that I recieve as a liquor clerk the blog is on hiatus for a bit. I did not know that it was so expensive to register a domain name and have hosting and all that other shit. Who knows though, maybe in a week or so I can clear up some room on the credit card and get it done. Like I said somewhere earlier, this thing is so close to seeing the light of day that it makes me sick. If anyone has an extra $100 lying around and would like to donate it...
In other news, I lost my copy of the new Sun Kil Moon record. That really pisses me off.

Fugazi
Some people have been talking about Fugazi breaking up due to a report on Buddyhead.com a while back. Here is a snippet from Dischord's email newsletter I received this morning:
Dischord News and DC band and label updates:
Contrary to a flood of recent internet postings, Fugazi has not broken
up. Over the years the band has circulated in and out of active
recording and touring according to the ebb and flow of their personal
lives. Two band members now have families with children and currently
their concerns are being put above the band's. As of this moment Fugazi
is not actively playing or recording but that doesn't mean the band
won't become active again in a year, two or possibly never....such is
life.
Members of Fugazi have always made music outside the band and will
continue to do so. Ian is currently playing in a duo with Amy Farina
(ex-Warmers) called the Evens, Brendan has been playing with Amy
Domingues and Jerry Busher in Garland of Hours, Joe recorded an album
with Black Sea (now called Decahedron) feautring ex-Frodus members
Jason and Shelby, and Guy performed with members of The Ex at a jazz
festival in Austria.
No break up, no problem. I've got some extreme shoveling to do.

Snow
It is snowing heavily and I will soon go and shovel my way to the garage. My emotions are becoming increasingly erratic-of the should I stay or should I go variety. I once thought that I had been involved in some fucked up situations until I was faced, a couple of days ago, with the possibility of being involved in a fucked up situation to end all fucked up situations. I sincerely hope that this does not come to pass. I will not, however, pray because what is done is done. A waiting game is the most difficult game to play.

El Capitan
Damn! Captain Kangaroo, aka Bob Keeshan, kicked the bucket. I will never forget when I was in 1st grade The Captain visited my elementary school and gave us a talk on something or another. I forget what it was exactly, but I do remember walking down the secod floor hallway that day and just as I got to end and was about to round the corner who do I nearly bump into? A big guy in a red suit. I didn't really know what to do so I just said "Hi!." The Captain said hello back and that was the end of it. I thought that I was pretty cool at the time and when The Captain talked to our class later that day I had little kid delusions that he was actually speaking to me personally and that I had some sort of special bond with him. Later in the school year when the principle was drawing "Thank You" notes (recieved for being a good child and put into a giant box each week for a drawing) and I won and guess what I chose? That's right, an autographed picture of The Captain himself. Sometimes I wonder what happened to that picture and the autographed Arnie Palmer photo I won. So it goes I guess. I hope The Captain is enjoying himself wherever he is. Tonight, as I'm listening to the devil music of The Dames, I shall raise a toast to The Captain and fondly recall our chance encounter in the Chester Park hall so many years ago.

Dean
From today's edition of the New York Times:
"Look, I'm not a perfect person," [Dean] said this morning during a speech at an opera house here. "I have my warts. I sometimes say things that get me in trouble. I wear suits that are cheap. But I say what I think and I believe what I say, and I'm willing to say things that are not popular but ordinary people know are right."
He added: "In other words, I lead with my heart and not my head. That's the only chance we have against George Bush."
These comments highlight two of my problems with Dean. First, his insistence on portraying himself as an ordinairy person even though he was born into an extraordinairily wealthy family. I understand that that is part of his plan and is essential to gaining the blue collar vote, but it's untrue. Why emphasize the cheapness of your suit when everyone damn well knows that your loaded? Maybe it shows that you're not a suave, slick showoff, but to some (like me) it comes across as pandering. Secondly, I really have to think that Dean would like to recant that final remark. I mean, I'm all for people leading with their heart from time to time, but I'd rather our president didn't make hasty decisions based on emotion in the heat of battle. What the hell do you mean that you won't lead with your head? I understand that it's petty to pick apart one sentence that was uttered in a speech, but come on! Howard Dean wants to be our next president and he just told me that he's going to run our country with his heart and not his head. Is that really the only chance that the Democrats have to defeat President Bush? I don't think so and that is why I most likely will not be voting for Howard Dean. Unless, of course, he wins the Democratic nomination, in which case I will be, alas, forced to.

Titles
I am mulling over some designs for the liquor clerks website and titles as well. Here's what I've got so far:
*The life of drunks through the eyes of those that (unfortunetely) know them best...Liquor Clerks.
*Liquor Clerks: Brave, depraved, and proudly serving the drunks of the nation.
*Liquor Clerks: Observing life from the bottom up.
Let me know what you think of these titles. I like the last one best right now, bit I'm still deciding. There are also endless variations on these that I've though of and if anyone has anything better I would really appreciate seeing them.

Strangeness
The last couple of days there has been a strange squeaking at my desk. It is almost as though a small rodent has decided to escape the deadly cold outside by inhabiting my space of blogging. It also, however, may just be that my desk is becoming annoyingly squeaky. Either way, I am not about to do anything about it.

Computer, Coachella, Elliott
Picking through the used records this evening at Big Lake Books I found a copy of Kraftwerk's 1981 release Computer World. I figured that since Kraftwerk is going to be playing at the Coachella Festival in May, I may as well give them a listen. I must say that, although I usually do not listen to techno, it's a really good record. I paid a little more than I normally would($6.50 even though the album cover has some wear and water damage) since you do not normally find Kraftwerk vinyl around these parts. I really have a strong desire to pick up Autobahn now. Anyway, if I didn't post it earlier, The Cure are going to be headlining day 2 of Coachella. Let's see: Day 1=The Pixies, Radiohead and Kraftwerk while Day 2=The Cure and possibly the Flaming Lips. I cannot fucking wait. On a sadder note I finally got Elliott Smith's final (until they clear out the vaults anyway) single in the mail today. The b-side isn't that great, but "Pretty (Ugly Before)" is a beautiful song.

Kristof
New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof has been traveling in Cambodia for the last week or so and been documenting it on the Times Op/Ed page. It has been incredibly interesting because he has just purchased the freedom of two teenage Cambodian prostitutes. Prostitution, as Kristof explains, in Cambodia essentially involves the forced slavery of these girls as they are either sold to the brothels by their parents, kidnapped, or otherwise. Long term stays in these brothels also, invariably amount to a death sentence as the rates of HIV infection are extraordinarily high. You'll have to register if you want to check Kristof's columns out, but it is well worth it. This is a link to his blog as well where he explains some of his decisions and answers email.

A Continuation
So I never did finish my post yesterday-sue me. Anyway, I was saying something about Dean and Clark and blah, blah, blah. Who knows what's going to happen to tell the truth, except to say that Dean has got to be feelin' a little embarrassed about his foaming at the mouth rant the other night. Like I said before, he's got to appeal to someone other than the angry college kid and those other people. It was a bit entertaining watching Wes Clark spar with a clearly not up for it Bob Dole on CNN however. I mean, Dole actually said something about how he lost the '96 election and how much more fun that was than winning and then kind of started mumbling. I felt genuinely bad for him and I think that Wes Clark did as well. On a weather note: damn is it cold, windy and snowy here. I don't mind it really though. I love the snow. Actually, I wish that it would snow everyday of the week I like snow so much. Something that really bothers me are the people that complain about the weather in Duluth when they know that it is going to be at the very least cold, probably snowy and quite possibly windy for five to six months out of the year. Don't like it? Move somewhere else.
An update on the liquor store blog: I am thinking that it should be up and running late next week or early the week thereafter. All of the pieces are falling into place and I just need to talk to one or two more people. On another note, there is going to be another weekly entertainment guide hitting the Northland since the Ripsaw decided to go monthly. It is going to be called the Transistor... something or other. It's going to be a weekly publication with only a front and back. I think that it will be a really cool thing to look at visually and content wise.
That's all from this neck of the woods where the coffee is good and Morrissey/Marr are making be feel all funny inside.

Big Win
After a couple too many Grain Belts and a thoroughly enjoyable win by the Timberwolves, I was a bit shocked to see that John Kerry pulled off such a strong victory in the Iowa primaries. The press seems to have Dean pegged as dead in the water, however I do believe that reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated. I think that he is still a strong candidate, but he really needs to connect with a constituencies other than the angry college kid and the disenfranchised thirty-something with a problem adhering to authority. I've personally never cared for the guy much and was really happy with John Edwards strong second place finish. I've always been most impressed with Edwards policy positions and demeanor, though I don't mind Kerry as well. I think that with the next couple of primaries including Wesley Clark it should be interesting to see if Dean can pull himself up...I've got a phone call...I'll be back...

On My Way
Well, I've made contact with a local web geek and so it seems that my dream of the the liquor store clerk blog project thingy may actually be realized. I am just awaiting his email response since our talk on Saturday night was a bit pointless due to my extreme level of intoxication. You see, I began drinking at work with my co-workers and after two blackberry brandy and sodas followed by two screwdrivers well, you get the picture. By the time I had moseyed on down to Pizza Luce to catch IPA's CD release show it was ON! I enjoyed seeing Sleepfarmer quite a bit as it was my first time though I was a bit disappointed by the Alpha Centauri and IPA. I really like IPA's new CD, but couldn't really connect with their show. Maybe it was the intoxication level? Who knows. I don't have to work again until Thursday so hopefully this thing gets off the ground soon so that I have something to do in the interim. I strongly suggest checking out the Lost Journals of Dougie Howser, M.D. over at McSweeney's Internet Tendency. It is pretty goddamn funny.

Mould
I figure since I've got a Westerberg link, I should probably have a Bob Mould link as well. The one at right is to his blog that I found over at PDD and this one is to an online data base. I actually just got Land Speed Record on vinyl a couple of days ago at a very reasonable price so that I don't have to go to the Capri and brave the Frat/Meathead crowd that's taken to infesting that place lately to bang my head(for those that don't know: playing song one, "All Tensed Up," plays the entire record).

Snow+Ideas
I'm off to work in a bit. Another night slanging booze to the thirsty denizens of Duluth's East Hillside. I've been thinking about that Blog and I'm really bummed that I don't have a digital camera now. If I take pictures on the job it'll take a long time to fill an entire roll and get them developed. The experience won't be as instantaneous as I'd like unless I scan Polaroids. But, that could get really expensive. Another idea that I've got is to include hyper links to bits that I'm going to record on a handheld tape recorder. I don't know what the logistics are to getting that stuff onto the Internet, but I'm guessing that someone must know how to do it. Words, pics, and audio. That sounds pretty cool to me. This project just keeps getting bigger and bigger in my head. On another note, it snowed quite a bit last night. It is about time. I put the new camera to good use on Superior Street. Well, that about all for today.

Eggers
I'm researching a story on selling out and I just happened upon an interview that Dave Eggers did circa AHWOSG with The Harvard Advocate. Eggers addendum to the interview is absolutely amazing. I'll reprint it here even though I think that may be illegal. No, actually I'll just provide a hyperlink here to the article. The entire interview is entertaining, but the addendum at the end is the real meat and potatoes. I could read this once a day and never tire of it.

Bright Eyes
I just got front row tickets to see Bright Eyes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and M. Ward play at the Pantages Theater in February. Damn am I excited! I haven't see Bright Eyes since Spring and missed MMJ's two shows here in the past couple of months. M. Ward, from what I've heard, is also a great artist. This should be a great time. Especially in the FRONT ROW! I don't think that I recapped my last concert experience (Ryan Adams at First Ave.) here yet. All I have to say is that after reading what Westy had to say on the matter, I think that Adams was just putting on a show. Albeit a fucked up show that wasted not only 3 hours of my time, but $30 of my money. Strange. Here's Chris Reimenschnieder's review from the Star Tribune:
BYLINE: Chris Riemenschneider
CREDITLINE: Star Tribune
HEADLINE: Review: Ryan Adams has a meltdown at First Avenue
Lambasting everything from the sound system to music journalists to local rock
legend Paul Westerberg, young Americana rocker Ryan Adams gave an unwieldy,
erratic performance that turned into a personal meltdown Sunday night at First
Avenue.
The 29-year-old former Whiskeytown singer's reputation as a bratty, gabby rock
star had added to the charm of past concerts, but he was anything but likeable
Sunday.
His two-hour show started as a clumsy deluge of uncharacteristically fast and
furious rock noise, and it turned into a disheveled acoustic set when the
electricity didn't work in Adams' favor. As the music got worse, so did the
singer's diva-like behavior.
Before his second of two stormy huffs off stage, he stood by himself, holding a
cocktail and whining, "I just want to go home for Christmas."
Make no mistake, Adams is one of rock's most gifted modern songwriters. His
prolific proficiency -- he releases at least one album a year -- impresses as
much as his knack for turning old formulas like heartache and hard living into
fresh inspiration.
However, that musical genius was buried Sunday beneath three or four blaring
guitars and overeager rhythms. Even the best songs off his loud new album "lloR
'n kcoR" fell flat, including "This Is It" and "Wish You Were Here" -- each of
which he played twice, not satisfied the first time.
The first clue to his off mood was the fact that Adams barely spoke for the
first hour. After a snide, uninspired version of "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is
to Be High)," the floodgates opened, and fans probably would've paid a second
cover charge to shut him up.
Apparently, three things set Adams off: problems with the amplifiers, which
likely stemmed from his inexperience with so many guitars; a bad review for
opening band the Stills in the local weekly City Pages, and a York, Pa.,
newspaper article in which former Replacements singer Westerberg said Adams
"needs to get his teeth kicked in."
Admitting that the Replacements "dominated my record collection," Adams went on
and on about how Westerberg had dealt him a cheap shot.
"You don't trash the people you inspired," he said.
Westerberg and the Stills review kept coming up even after the sound problems
were averted by temporarily ditching electric guitars. The ensuing acoustic set
was an improvised disaster, with Adams making up lyrics about the Replacements
and his own public image, including, "Yeah, so I dated an actress . . you
would, too." (His current girlfriend is film star Parker Posey, plus he dated
Winona Ryder.)
"This is one of my worst shows ever, but I like it," he said defiantly near the
end.
By then, half of the sellout crowd had left. Of the ones who stayed, some were
no doubt hoping Westerberg would show up and meet Adams' needs.

Purchases
I purchased a Polaroid camera and a regular film camera today from the neighboorhood pawn shop. I know the guy there so he gave me a pretty good deal, $50 for both. I like having the Polaroid around even though the film is really fucking expensive. I bought two 10 exposure cartridges for $25 after tax! I am making sure that the Polaroids I take are well worth the money. I also bought a couple rolls of B/W film along with some color for the other camera. I'm really excited to start snapping things. I noticed when I was putting together a photo album the other day that I have exactly ZERO photos of around the last 4 years of my life. That's pretty depressing because I would like to think that I've done some pretty cool stuff. I'm still deciding whether or not to go out tonight now that I'm feeling a little better. Who knows? This is a good one: tonight at work I almost foiled a robbery. This huge dude walks in acting kind of strange. He's got a big puffy jacket on and I really don't pay him too much mind. All of a sudden I see him back by the cordial section non-chalantly stuffing a bottle of Kahlua into his pockets. I ring the bell to get my other co-worker up front to no avail. The guy asks me where the little bottles of gin are and I show him. He peruses them a bit then announces out loud that he's only got $2 and that he's gotta ask his lady outside for some money. Fuck it, I think, and as he's walking out the door I stop him and ask if he's got anythink in his pockets. He gets all hysterical, pulling out the pocket with nothing in it and making a big fuss. I ask him about the other pocket and if I can see what's in there? I begin to stick my hand in his pocket and, when I grab ahold of the stolen bottle, the dude breaks for the door. He makes it out the door and begins running when my co-worker catches him from behind and slams him hard on the cold pavement. They tussle around for a bit, but the guy eventually gets away-not without some scrapes and bruises however. All in all it was good for a laugh. We did get the guy's doo rag too!

Influenza
I've been bragging all fall and winter long about how I've never gotten the flu and never will. Well, I woke up New Year's Day feeling awful and I still feel like death itself. Hopefully this will subside in a day or two. I actually feel a little better than yesterday. Sorry I couldn't make it to Shark's or Beaners Steve. Hope those Podland shows went well. Now I'm going to go lie down in my bed and watch my sixth movie in three days.
